2024 Online Teacher Professional Development Courses

Join The National WWII Museum for exclusive online teacher training courses that will bring the history and legacy of World War II to life in your classroom. During the 2023–24 academic year, the Museum will offer two courses based on our most recent summer teacher training workshops. These courses will incorporate recorded sessions from these programs not available anywhere else. Educators participating in these courses will gain access to Museum collections, curricula, and staff, all from the comfort of their home.

Teachers who complete all course requirements will receive a certificate and letter confirming they completed 40 hours of professional development with The National WWII Museum. Participants can work at their own pace to complete coursework during the 12-week course period.

These courses are free and open to any teacher at an accredited public, charter, private, or parochial school.

Spring 2024 Course: The Home Front, Entertainment, and World War II

Enrollment: January 8 – February 26, 2024
Course: February 5 – April 29, 2024

This course will provide teachers with a deep dive into the role Hollywood played in the US war effort including producing military training, propaganda, entertainment, and public service films. Walt Disney alone devoted over 90% of its wartime output to creating media and materials related to the war including over 1,200 unit insignia. Over five modules, teachers will examine the broader historical context of the media produced during World War II as well as the skills students need to critically analyze different forms of primary sources. With a special focus on the Museum's collections and curriculum, this course will give teachers effective teaching strategies to help students better understand the US home front, analyze World War II propaganda and entertainment, and evaluate primary sources.
